Named after NSW Governor Ralph Darling, Darlinghurst, or ‘Darlo’, is the heart of
Sydney’s gay scene and the home of the Mardi Gras. The Darlinghurst Court House at Taylor Square is one of Sydney's most historic buildings, built in 1835. It is adjacent to historic Darlinghurst Gaol, which is now the National Art School.
The main thoroughfare in Darlinghurst is Oxford Street, probably best known (together with the streets around it) as the biggest concentration of Sydney's large and vibrant gay community. Oxford Street is well known worldwide as the primary route for the annual Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade. Oxford Street is also where any number of gay bars, nightclubs, cafes, and bookshops can be found.
Stanley Street is one of the suburb's two secondary restaurant strips (with Victoria Street) and is often referred to as Sydney's first "Little Italy". There is an annual Italian Festival held here every June. The restaurants in the area actually include Japanese, Thai and Italian.
The Australian Museum (natural history) and the Sydney Jewish Museum are located in Darlinghurst. The district is home to a large number of great restaurants, bars and stylish shops.
Geographic Location
