Gilgandra sits on the banks of the Castlereigh River in the Central West region of
New South Wales. Its position at the junction of the Newell, Oxley and Castlereigh Highways and its wide range of accommodation, eateries and tourist attractions make it an ideal stopover for travelers.
The town is famous as the start of the 500km recruitment march from Gilgandra to
Sydney during the First World War in 1815. The number of recruits swelled from 35 to 263 during the course of the march and they announced their arrival in Sydney with the Australian cry of "Coo-ee” – hence Gilgandra’s title “Home of the Coo-ees".
