Murwillumbah is located in the stunningly beautiful region of the Tweed River Valley. The local Aborigines, the Bunjalung people, named it for the possums that abound in the surrounding rainforest. It is the administrative centre for the Tweed Heads coastal strip and valley, an area noted for its mountains, beaches and fertile hinterland. Visitors driving though the area are entranced by its greenery, mainly due to the fields of sugarcane which is the main crop for the Tweed Valley. The fertile soils created by the run-off of the Tweed River are suitable for all sorts of sub-tropical agriculture including coffee and bananas – the Banana Festival is an annual event in August.
