The New South Wales Outback stretches from
Walgett in the north to
Wentworth in the south and west to the border with South Australia.
The towns here reflect a history of explorers, pioneers and prospectors, are linked by roads that once were stock-routes, have country pubs with colourful characters and welcome visitors with their own individual brand of hospitality.
The Outback's main town,
Broken Hill, is home to the School of the Air, the Royal Flying Doctor Service and a vibrant arts community, including names as celebrated as Pro Hart and Jack Absalom. Silverton, just 30km from Broken Hill, is regarded as the film capital of the Outback for its classic images of red earth, scarlet sunsets and camels in the main street. It also has a thriving artist community, with many galleries open to the public.
The legendary waterways of the Darling, Murray, Murrumbidgee and Lachlan Rivers provide opportunities to experience the tranquility and natural beauty of this vast inland region, either by road or paddle boat. They also provide glimpses of Australia’s pastoral past at the small Outback towns and rich indigenous heritage such as the ancient fish traps at
Brewarrina. The
Menindee Lakes, 110km from Broken Hill, is an amazing inland sea and a breeding ground for numerous species of water birds.
To the south, in the Wilandra Lakes World Heritage area, with Mungo National Park at its centre, rain and wind erosion have uncovered evidence of more than 40,000 years of human occupation. A feature of the park is the 33km long dramatically sculpted Walls of China.
