Located at the mouth of the Hastings River, Port Macquarie was a quiet fishing village before its superb natural attractions turned it into a desirable holiday destination in the 1970s. Historically, it is the most significant town on the New South Wales coast north of Newcastle; originally inhabited by the Biripi people, the area was discovered by John Oxley in 1818 and settled as a penal colony in 1821.
