Six hours’ drive south of
Sydney, the Snowy Mountains is a wild and beautiful area that encompasses Australia’s largest snowfields and Mt Kosciuszko, the country’s highest peak. This is a year-round holiday destination – in winter skiers come for their favourite indulgence and for the other three seasons the slopes are the domain of walkers, mountain bikers and horse riders, while the snow fed streams and lakes attract fishermen, campers and canoeists.
The regional centre of
Jindabyne is the start of the Alpine Way, a scenic drive that links the towns of the High Country. The main ski resorts are
Thredbo, Mount Selwyn,
Charlotte Pass and Perisher Blue, which encompasses
Perisher Valley, Mt Blue Cow,
Guthega and
Smiggin Holes.
All resorts lie within the borders of Mt Kosciuszko National Park, where linked pistes form a network of downhill routes. From Bullocks Flat Skitube terminal below the snow line, the Skitube Railway takes skiers via one of the country’s longest tunnels to the skifields at Perisher and Blue Cow. In summer the 600m Kosciuszko Express chairlift carries walkers to the high country tracks where a raised metal walkway leads to the summit of Mt Kosciuszko and its views over the Victorian Alps. This vast wilderness area of Mt Kosciuszko National Park has some of the most spectacular scenery in Australia and some of the most diverse plant and animal life. Bush camping is permitted in most parts of the park and several old drovers’ huts exist as emergency shelter.
