The Murray River flows from its source in the
Snowy Mountains to the ocean at
Encounter Bay in
South Australia, and for most of this journey its banks marks the border between
New South Wales and
Victoria. The Murray River is Australia’s most important inland waterway and its ecosystem is still home to ancient forests of river red gums, extensive wetlands and untouched semi-arid areas.
The Murray region of NSW includes the major towns of
Echuca,
Albury-
Wodonga (on the NSW-Victorian border), and
Deniliquin. A popular way of exploring the Murray is on a traditional paddle-steamer or by hiring your own houseboat. Albury-Wodonga is a prominent tourist and commercial centre and an ideal base for a variety of activities and from which to explore the nearby wineries, gold mining towns and other historic townships along the river.
Deniliquin is located on the Edward River, a branch of the Murray, which has a series of lagoons and sandy beaches bordered by parkland and state forest. Popular activities include waterskiing, canoeing, swimming, river cruises and fishing for the famous Murray Cod.
