Darwin Arts and Entertainment
The Top End is home to every form of the arts – theatre, music, dance, film and visual arts – and since much of it is local product, it provides a true representation of the region.
The Northern Territory is home to more than 5000 indigenous artists who speak many distinct languages and paint in internationally recognised regional styles. Darwin’s flagship art venues are the
Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory and the Darwin Entertainment Centre. Artists also take advantage of the climate and local structures to present entertainment and exhibitions at venues such as the waterfront Deckchair Cinema, the town hall ruins, the World War II oil storage tunnels, Brown’s Mart (a refurbished warehouse) and the Botanic Gardens amphitheatre.
The Museum and Art Gallery features a permanent gallery dedicated to Cyclone Tracy, as well as collections of Aboriginal art and marine history. Darwin’s nightlife accommodates all tastes and ages, from the pubs and nightclubs of the city centre, most of which feature live bands, to the glamour and gaming tables of the MGM Grand Darwin Casino.
