Tropical bushland, crystal clear thermal pools, a very colourful pub and a chunk of literary history are the celebrated characteristics of this small but exceptionally friendly town. An easy hour’s drive south of Katherine, Mataranka is the perfect base for exploring the many attractions of the region. The area was made famous by Jeannie Gunn in her novel We of the Never Never, where she wrote about her experiences of living on nearby Elsey Station. Mataranka lies at the headwaters of the Roper River – one of the truly magnificent rivers in the world. Fed from crystal clear springs, the river flows 250km east to the Gulf of Carpentaria, and is well known to the fisherman as one of the best spots to catch big barramundi.
