Historic gold mining town
Pine Creek was the site of a massive goldrush during the 1870s – an event which played an important role in the history and the cultural demographics of the Northern Territory. The discovery of gold here during the building of the overland telegraph line attracted thousands of gold diggers to the area and even greater numbers of Chinese coolies to do the hard labour, run stores and provide essential services. The uranium mining of the 1960s and 70s renewed interest in the sleepy little town. More recently, the opening up of Kakadu National Park as a significant tourist destination has put Pine Creek on the map as the 'back door' to this magnificent World Heritage-listed wetlands area.
