Renner Springs is a little oasis in the desert, located around a spring-fed lagoon 159km north of
Tennant Creek. The area around Renner Springs is generally considered to be on the line where the wet tropical climate of the Top End gives way to the arid and dusty harshness of Central
Australia. Like so many places along the Stuart Highway, Renner Springs owes its origins to the overland telegraph line; this important water source was discovered in 1872 by the team's medical officer Dr Frederick Renner. The town’s main attraction is the special wayside ambience of the Renner Springs Roadhouse, originally an old army hut removed after World War II from the army's staging camp at Banka Banka Station.
