The discovery of gold in the 1930s made Tennant Creek Australia's last goldrush town. As one of the Territory's major centres, Tennant Creek still has enormous potential for the future of gold and manganese mining, while maintaining a strong pastoral background with the Barkly region. The town has a colourful past, with links to explorers, prospectors, bushrangers and cattle duffers.
Now Tennant Creek plays host to the many modern day explorers that come to see the unique landforms and scenery in this part of the Outback. The Tennant Creek and Barkly region is located near the junction of two great highways – the Explorers Way (Stuart Highway) which links the Top End with South Australia and the Overlanders Way (Barkly Highway) which heads east into Queensland connecting the 'Reef to the Outback'.
