Advancetown, otherwise known as Hinze Dam, is located 10km west of
Nerang in the heart of the Hinterland, on the
Gold Coast,
Queensland.
Pioneers originally settled around Advancetown because of the good stands of local timber, like many other areas in the Hinterland. In 1905 Timber-getter and sawyer, Ernest Belliss coined the name Advancetown, and by the 1930s it had become a halfway point where drivers and bullocks teams that were carting logs off the McPherson Ranges to the rail head at Nerang rested, ate and drank.
The original small settlement is now beneath the waters of the Hinze Dam on the Nerang River, which is the major water supply for much of the Gold Coast. It has also been stocked with Golden Perch, Silver Perch, Saratoga, Mary River Cod and Australian Bass, making Hinze dam a popular haunt with bait anglers. Many fish are prone to surface feeding which makes this a fantastic fly fishing destination.
