Allora is a pretty little town in the Southern Downs noted for its quaint streetscapes, with shops and pubs that are reminders of a bygone era.
Allora is known to the locals as the ‘best little town on the Downs’, in fact, a travel writer even described the main street as 'one of the three best streetscapes in Australia'. Allora’s sense of history is maintained with a Heritage Trail that takes walkers past historic buildings, themed street banners and a series of murals depicting local milestones. Allora’s name is probably an interpretation of the Aboriginal word 'gnallorah' meaning 'swampy place'.
Nestled beside Dalrymple Creek just off the highway between Toowoomba and Warwick, Allora personifies many of the small town communities that lie around the southern Downs area. The town rose to prominence in 1886 with the discovery of an ancient cranium that challenged ideas about how long Aboriginals have occupied Australia. Tests revealed that the Talgai skull was at least 15, 000 years old. Allora was also the childhood home of P.L Travers who wrote Mary Poppins.
