Amity Point is a sleepy fishing village located on the north western point of
North Stradbroke Island, on the
Gold Coast,
Queensland.
Surrounded by virgin forests and pristine beaches, Amity Point was the first European settlement in this area in 1825, when a pilot station was built to guide ships into Moreton Bay and the Brisbane River. By 1950 Amity point had become a popular holiday destination, as it remains today with many
Brisbane residents making regular weekend and day trips.
The waters and forests surrounding Amity point have an amazing amount of flora and fauna, and since North Stradbroke,
Moreton and
South Stradbroke Island are made up entirely of sand, it is quite remarkable that such a range exists. Only a few plants have managed to survive in such conditions elsewhere in the world. Dugong, stingrays, turtles, stone fish, octopus and at times whales have been seen in the bay, and Amity Point boasts some of the largest shark numbers in the world.
There is also an abundance of birdlife such as seagulls, pelicans, and lorikeets, and if visitors are lucky koalas can be spotted feeding in the gum trees. The three islands are also the only place to find a unique species of ancient ferns, considered a delicacy by the native aborigines. Plenty of fresh fish, crabs, prawns and oysters are available, caught daily by the local professional fishermen and crabbers. Amity Point is also popular with boaties as an anchorage.
