The beach township of Bargara is surrounded by rocky headlands of volcanic origin. The town's best features are its delightful beaches (Kelly's Beach, Nielson's Park and The Basin), which offer safe swimming, good surf and rock pools that are home to some interesting marine life.
Just north of Bargara is Australia's most accessible mainland turtle rookery at Mon Repos Conservation Park. Four types of turtle – loggerhead, green, flatback and leatherback – nest here between November and March. The best time to see turtles laying their eggs is at midnight when the tide is high. Observation of the turtles is controlled by the Queensland National Parks and Wildlife Service Information Centre, open every day during the turtle season with information displays, lighting and boardwalk access to the beach.
