Biloela (an Aboriginal word meaning cockatoo) is the largest town in the Banana Shire and the centre for a diverse agricultural industry including cotton, sorghum, wheat, herbs and spices. There is also a huge cattle industry with the largest number of cattle of any shire in
Queensland.
The thriving Biloela community boasts many sporting, cultural and recreational activities and a range of visitor attractions including Australia's premier primary industries exhibition, the SILO. This area was founded on coal mining – the Callide coalfields operate two mines which provide coal to the Callide Power Station. The Callide Mine Lookout provides spectacular views of Biloela and the picturesque Callide Valley, as well as the mine areas and the world's largest walking dragline.
