Blackall is an attractive country town on the Matilda Highway, 1127kms from
Brisbane. It has trees down the centre of the main street, lots of old-style pubs and a laid-back air in keeping with its location on the Barcoo River. Local legend says 'anyone who crosses the Barcoo River ten times is here to stay'.
The area around Blackall was explored by Sir Thomas Mitchell in 1846. The town was first settled in 1864 and was named after
Queensland's governor Sir Samuel Blackall. The area around the town was taken up by huge pastoral leases and over the next forty years the town became an important centre for transportation. Prior to the arrival of the rail service in
Barcaldine in 1886 it was the main town in the region.
