Blackwater is a modern mining town and gateway to the beautiful Blackdown Tablelands, two hours west of
Rockhampton in Central
Queensland,
Australia.
Six major open cut coal mines dot the landscape surrounding Blackwater and provide its main employment opportunities. Passing through this part of Central Queensland it’s easy to assume that Blackwater is little more than a few petrol stations and motels, but the town itself is quite substantial, with a large shopping centre and recreational facilities.
However the real attraction of Blackwater lies 55km south at the spectacular Blackdown Tableland National Park where you’ll find unforgettable views and hundreds of plants and wildlife species, some of which are only found in the park. Blackwater’s strange name was inspired by the colour of the water – stained by the ti-trees that are found in the area.
