Bongaree is to be found at the southern opening of the passage on
Bribie Island, a 31-kilometre island to the north of
Brisbane on the
Sunshine Coast,
Queensland. The name Bongaree is the name of an Aboriginal man who served as a guide when Matthew Flinders landed on the island, during the time of European settlement.
Bribie Island is an extrodinary wildlife sanctuary covered in sub-tropical bushland, with kilometres of white, sandy inshore and surfing beaches. The island is one of the only off shore islands in Queensland linked by bridge to the mainland, which makes it an easy one day trip.
Bongaree is one of three small settlements on the largely unspoiled island where you can find accommodation and basic amenities. The part of the island on the northern reaches of Moreton Bay is separated by the Pumicestone Passage, which is renowned for safe boating and good fishing and contains an exciting diversity of fauna. Dugongs, turtles and passing dolphins and more than 350 species of birds and waterfowl breed have made the waterway their home. If in the Sunshine Coast, Bribie Island and Bongaree is a must see.
