Bunya Mountains Accommodation & Travel Information
BUNYA MOUNTAINS 200km NW of Brisbane
Queensland’s second oldest national park
Lovingly referred to as “The Bunyas” by locals, Bunya Mountains is a beautiful place for a holiday, a day out in the cool mountain air, or just a scenic drive. This area was a significant meeting place for the region’s Aboriginal tribes who came here for the Bunya nut harvest.
An isolated piece of the Great Dividing Range, the peaks of Bunya Mountain rise to an average of 975m with glorious rainforest, eucalypt forests, woodlands and high altitude grasslands. Once logged for its exotic timbers, it was declared a national park in 1908 and has since become a nature lovers’ retreat with bushwalks, waterfalls, native wildlife, over 120 species of birds and a stunning array of flora including orchids, ferns and staghorns.
