Canungra is a sleepy little town close to
Mount Tamborine on the
Gold Coast, and is also one of Queensland's newly emerging wine growing regions. The rich river loam has built up over centuries supported by a naturally occurring layer of gravel a metre under the surface means that Canungra Valley soil is perfect for grapes.
Originally Canugra was just a series of camps set up by loggers in the late nineteenth century, but today the town is largely reliant on the Australian Army’s Land Warfare training centre set in the rugged bush land. In the centre of town is a memorial to the Canungra-trained advisers and instructors of the Australian Army Training Team who served in Vietnam.
There are bushwalking and horse-riding safaris available for visitors to Cunungra into the majestic Lamington National Park. Hang-gliders and para-gliders that launch themselves of the western slopes of Mount Tamborine are also a familiar sight in the sky.
