Charleville is the hub of a vast sheep and cattle raising region, located on the Warrego River at the junction of the Mitchell Highway, the Warrego Highway and the Diamantina Development Road. It is a typical Outback town with heritage buildings maintaining the charm and character of a bygone era. Cobb & Co started building coaches here in 1892 and continued to do so until 1920.
The town has a special link to Australia’s early aviators – Ross and Keith Smith landed just north of here with engine trouble on the first flight from London to Sydney in 1919; Amy Johnson landed here in 1920; and the first regular Qantas route was between Charleville and Cloncurry in 1922. With a population of 3800, Charleville is the largest town in south-west Queensland.
