This fascinating town is famous for its mining heyday and the fine heritage buildings that are reminders of this prosperous era. Between 1872 and 1916, Charters Towers produced ore worth 25 million pounds, and had its own Stock Exchange – the only one in the world to take three calls a day. Although some gold and other minerals are still mined in the area, the Towers now exists as the business and education centre for one of Queensland’s largest cattle-producing regions, the Dalrymple Shire. Its rich mining past has been conserved by The National Trust of Queensland. Of particular interest is the Venus Battery, which began crushing ore in 1872 and processed 15.5 tonnes of gold during its lifetime.
