Chinchilla is a progressive agricultural centre with an outstanding rural museum in
Western Downs, Queensland. This vital friendly town is the site for Queensland's newest coal-fired power station and deposits of gas and coal. It is also renowned for its vast deposits of petrified wood, dating back 180 million years. The area around Chinchilla has an amazing diversity of agriculture – grain crops such as wheat, sorghum and barley, cattle and sheep, and more recently cotton, melons and grapes.
Chinchilla has a thriving timber industry with the Barakula State Forest being the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. An important part of Chinchilla's history is its role in the prickly pear eradication scheme of the 1920s. The Chinchilla Prickly Pear Experimental Station was responsible for the propagation of the cactoblastis moths imported from Argentina, heralded as the saviours of rural Australia.
