Cloncurry marks the end of the Landsborough Highway and the beginning of the Burke Developmental Road, linking western Queensland with the Gulf of Carpentaria. It was the centre of a copper boom in the 1860s, and by 1916 was the largest copper producer in the British Empire.
Today Cloncurry is once again booming with four major mines and many small mines in operation. Many of the buildings in Cloncurry are original dwellings. The town has a significant place in Outback history, being the birthplace of the Royal Flying Doctor Service, and the conceptual site for Qantas.
