At the southern end of the
Gold Coast, with the Queensland–New South Wales border running through the main street, are the twin towns of Coolangatta /
Tweed Heads. Coolangatta has its own sheltered beach and nearby picnic area, and further south, Greenmount Beach has gentle surf where children can play safely. The airport, Australia's fifth busiest, is in Coolangatta, and at Tweed Heads is the Captain Cook Memorial Lighthouse with the latest laser beams.
Along with the sun, sand and surf, the southern end of the Gold Coast also offers plenty of sporting amenities, clubs, accommodation and good shopping. Every second Sunday market stalls are set up along the beachfront, offering a selection of local handicrafts.
