Emerald Travel Guide
Emerald accommodation, Emerald activities and attractions, Emerald maps, transportation to and around Emerald - the ALL NEW Jasons Emerald Destination Travel Guide is your complete visitor guide for Emerald.
Emerald is an attractive ‘Tidy Town’ winner and a welcoming stop for the inland traveller. It was established in 1879 as a railway siding and today its most photographed attraction is the National Trust railway station, built in 1890 and restored in 1987. Emerald is located on the junction of the Capricorn and Gregory Highways and is the hub of the Central Highlands region.
The town is surrounded by cotton farms and grain fields and the area also produces cattle, oilseeds, soybeans and citrus. The gemfields around Emerald are the largest sapphire producing fields in the Southern Hemisphere. Keen fossickers can also find topaz, amethyst, jasper, chalcedony, tourmaline and diamond.
Emerald has dinosaur exhibits at the Central Highlands Science Centre, a living museum in the Pioneer Cottage Complex, with cotton gin and coal mine tours, a charming colonial railway station and the world’s biggest Van Gogh sunflower painting. Visitors to Emerald at Easter can take part in the annual Sunflower Festival.
