Great Keppel Island, offshore from Yeppoon in Central Queensland, is the largest of 14 islands in the Keppel Group, edged by 17 sandy beaches and covering an area of 1454 hectares. Great Keppel with its balmy climate and crystal blue waters epitomises what islands on the Great Barrier Reef are all about.
It is also one of the most accessible Islands on the east coast and is a great choice for backpackers looking for an island resort with budget accommodation. Great Keppel Island lies 15 kilometres from the coast of Yeppoon, Central Queensland. Easily accessible by ferry or aircraft from Yeppoon and Emu Park, Great Keppel is great for a day trip or a longer to explore some of the fantastic fringing coral on the island.
The local aboriginals called Great Keppel Island Wappaburrah which means ‘resting place’. Centuries old middens and mounds of shellfish left by Great Keppel’s first indigenous inhabitants is evident of the plentiful seafood found around Great Keppel Island. The history of indigenous occupation of the Keppel Islands is rich and ultimately tragic, and aboriginies still maintain connection with the islands today.
