Gympie on the
Sunshine Coast was one of
Queensland’s richest gold mining towns, and the romance of the gold-rush era lingers in its historic buildings and a gold-mining museum. Now it is the major provincial city of the Mary Valley agricultural district and gateway to the Cooloola Coast.
Gympie plays host to a number of major tourist events including the Country Music Muster in August, the week-long Gold Rush Festival in October and “Race the Rattler” on the June long weekend, when runners from near and far challenge the famous Valley Rattler steam train to a race from Dagun to Gympie.
