Herberton is a friendly, historic country town set among the jacarandas and giant eucalypts in the picturesque hills of Atherton Tablelands in Tropical North Queensland. Just 18km from Atherton, Herberton is the oldest town on the Tablelands, established in 1880 when tin was discovered at the headwaters of the Herbert River. Several routes were hacked out of the rainforest by the miners, and today towns like Mareeba and Atherton and many others on the Atherton Tablelands owe their existence to these early prospectors. A very prominent landmark as you enter the town from Atherton is the Great Northern Mining Concentrator – now a relic of the past.
Herberton’s fascinating history is brought to life at the Herberton Mining Museum and Visitor Information Centre. The Museum is also the starting point for the Great Northern Walking Trails and the short Mine Walk has some remarkable examples of early mining machinery. For a look at the town’s historical buildings, take the self-guided Heritage Walk or drop into the Herberton Historical Village. Reopening in April 2009, this collection of more than 30 buildings has been restored to its former glory, and is considered one of Queensland’s most outstanding collections of Australiana. Nature lovers and walkers can enjoy a visit to nearby Mount Hypipamee National Park, with its rainforest clad mountains, volcanic crater and the spectacular Dinner Falls.
