Herberton, which is 18kms from
Atherton, is a pleasant little town set amongst jacarandas and giant eucalypts in the picturesque hills of
Atherton Tablelands in
Tropical North Queensland.
Otherwise known as the Cairns Highlands and once the most important tin mining town on the Tablelands, Herberton was established in 1880 when prospectors discovered tin at the headwaters of the Herbert River. The need for good access routes to the sea meant a number of routes were hacked out of the rainforest, and towns like
Mareeba and Atherton and many others on the Atherton Tablelands can thank the prospectors for discovering tin at Herberton.
A very prominent landmark that visitors will not be able to miss as they enter the town from Atherton is the Great Northern Mining Concentrator – now a relic of the past. Prior to European settlement, Herberton was home to a number of indigenous tribes.
Herberton has a fascinating history – if visiting drop into the Herberton Historical Village which is known to be one of Queensland’s greatest collections of Australiana. Other historical villages include the Jack & Newell Stores, the Court House and the present School of Arts building. The area also boasts Queensland’s only tropical vineyard.
