Innisfail is a colourful country town on North Queensland’s “Green Way” – the highway linking Townsville and Cairns. On the banks of the Johnstone River and just a short distance from the palm-fringed coastline, it is the heart of a prosperous sugar and fruit-growing region and within easy reach of many of the state’s most sought-after tourist attractions.
These include the Atherton Tablelands to the west, Dunk Island, the Hinchinbrook Passage and Mission Beach to the south, the Frankland Islands and Cairns to the north, and to the east, the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef. The multicultural community reflects its origin with the Italian settlers who arrived early last century to work the cane fields.
