Just a 35 minute drive from
Brisbane, Ipswich is Queensland’s oldest provincial city and the birthplace of Queensland Railways. Located on the Bremer River, a tributary of the Brisbane River, Ipswich was settled as a people moved inland from the penal colony at
Moreton Bay.
Its limestone hills led to the establishment of a lime kiln for building in stone, and the town blossomed with the discovery of coal at nearby Redbank and the construction of a railway line. Today Ipswich is renowned for its architectural, cultural and natural heritage. It is a flourishing art centre and festivals throughout the year celebrate the diversity of cultures in the area.
