Karumba may still be a sleeply little town located on the banks of the Norman River, but it is still renowned as a major fishing port on the Gulf of Carpentaria, in Tropical
North Queensland. Made up of a port, wharves, refrigerated storage areas, slipways, a few shops, a pub and inexpensive accommodation, Karumba epitomises what a small fishing village is about.
Karumba’s position on the banks of Norman River, which allows direct access to the river and sea, saw it first serving as a stopover point for flying boats travelling from London to Australia in the 1930’s, by the 1950’s it had become a popular holiday spot for visitors eager for the fishing spoils of the Gulf of Carpentaria. Karunda experienced a boom in the 1970’s when it became the heart of the Gulf fishing industry. Today the economy revolves around the prawn fishing industry and the barramundi industry.
