Kirra is beach-side suburb of the
Gold Coast,
Queensland. The rocky headland known as Kirra Point separates
Kirra Beach to the north and
Coolangatta beach to the south.
Kirra is Gold Coast's most famous board riding beach, renowned throughout the world. These beaches are famous for having long, right-hand surf breaks - experienced surfers will find challenging waves and beginners will enjoy the smaller waves that break in closer to the shore. Kirra works best in solid east and northeast swells during the cyclone season, but is popular all year round. Beware of the fierce current at Kirra, which can drag unsuspecting riders to the north.
The beach offers protected swimming beach during south easterlies, and the plentiful soft white squeaky sand is great for volleyball and cricket. There is an abundance of fishing all year round with dart and bream being more plentiful in the winter months. Interesting dive sites are situated off Kirra and the Cook Islands to the south. The Oceanway offers walking and viewing platforms which are wheelchair accessible.
