Lake Tinaroo Travel Guide

Lake Tinaroo accommodation, Lake Tinaroo activities and attractions, Lake Tinaroo maps, transportation to and around Lake Tinaroo - the ALL NEW Jasons Lake Tinaroo Destination Travel Guide is your complete visitor guide for Lake Tinaroo.

The manmade reservoir of Lake Tinaroo in Tropical North Queensland, is regarded as the best Barramundi fishing in the world.  Located one and a half hours drive west of Cairns, Lake Tinaroo has over 200km of shoreline, and is quite often referred to the jewel in the crown of the Atherton Tablelands

Because Tinaroo has no closed season, the Lake is the perfect place for the fishing enthusiast - as the lake is home to record size Barramundi.  Each year, the lake is stocked with fresh baby "Barra" from the Walkamin Research Station because the fish are unable to breed due to the lack of access to salt water. They grow to massive sizes because the Barramundi have no natural predators. There is also a abundance of wildlife that populate the Danbulla Forest around the Lake - Rock Wallabies and Water Dragons, Goannas, Platypus and approximately 300 bird species.

With over 200kms of scenic shoreline, sailing, waterskiing, swimming, boating, fishing, red clawing, bird watching, and walking are popular pastimes for visitors and locals alike. Constructed in the 1958 on the Baron River at a cost of $12 666 000, the dam is 45.1 metres high and traps enough water from the Baron River to creates a lake 3/4 the size of Sydney Harbour. It is reported through popular legend that upon discovering alluvial tin at the headwaters of the Baron River, Mr Atherton (who the Atherton Tablelands is named after) shouted “Tin, Harroo!”

Hiking paths wind in and out of the mountains surrounding the lake and range from a pleasant walk from the parking lot to the water front, to week long treks around the lake and its mountains.
