Machans Beach is the first beach heading north out of
Cairns in
Tropical North Queensland. Located only 10 minutes from the CBD, Machans Beach is a laid-back residential suburb, on the Barron River Delta. The beach has maintained a unique character through the integration of a diverse population, and fortunately escaped the unrelenting development of North Queensland.
A few years back the beach became prone to severe erosion so a large rock wall has been erected to prevent the beachfront houses from falling into the ocean. The beach is great for afternoon strolls or a game of cricket – at low tide the beach becomes wider than it is long so if visitors want a swim, try the next beach in the chain of
Cairns Beaches.
Machans Beach has interesting origins, from it's aboriginal roots and the ensuing colonization by Europeans and Chinese and the economic development that followed as Cairns developed.
