Mareeba is a busy commercial centre located in the
Atherton Tablelands. It was originally settled by John Atherton, who erected the first building in 1880. The town is located near the confluence of Granite Creek, Emerald Creek and the Barron River, and takes its name from the Aboriginal word meaning 'meeting of the waters'. It is also the crossroads for travellers heading north to
Cooktown and the
Cape York Peninsula along the Peninsula Development Road, and those going west along the Burke Development Road.
Mareeba lies in the middle of a rich agricultural area that produces rice, coffee, tobacco, fruit, sugar and cattle. Several cattle saleyards, meatworks and a sawmill have added to its prosperity.
