Moranbah is a thriving, single purpose mining town, which was established in 1971 specifically to service the Goonyella and Peak Downs Mines. Both are large open-cut operations. In the 1980s the town continued to expand with the discovery of huge coal reserves and the opening of the Riverside coalmine to the north of the town.
Moranbah, although modern in most aspects, has the charm and warmth of a rural community. Local handicrafts are displayed periodically at the community centre and at the local markets held on the last Sunday on the month in the Town Square. A tour of the Peak Downs Mine leaves the Moranbah town square at 10 am on Thursdays. To the west of the town is the spectacular Peak Range National Park. Moranbah is well known for its May Day function, Bronze Title Camp draft and Rodeo.
