Mossman is a picturesque country town, nestled at the foot of mist topped mountains of Tropical
North Queensland.
Located 75 km from
Cairns, Mossman was named by the explorer George Dalrymple in 1873 after the minerals explorer Hugh Mossman. Mossman’s fame is largely related to the moment when his 11-year-old Aboriginal servant, Jupiter, found gold at Charters Towers in 1872. The boom which followed the discovery did much to help the development of North Queensland.
A village was established in 1876. In 1896 the first sugarcane plantation was established in the area and the following year the Mossman sugar mill was opened, which still runs today. Mossman is the last main town before the Daintree River and provides a service centre for visitors heading north. The town has retained it old village style and remained largely unaffected by tourism, and there are some great things to see in the area such as Mossman Gorge, and the town has some excellent examples older style North Queensland architecture.
