Known as one of the most important square kilometres in Australia ecologically, Mount Coolum is an isolated volcanic dome that rises 208 metres above the sugar cane fields, on the
Sunshine Coast,
Queensland. Located 80kms north of
Brisbane and protected by Mt Coolum National Park, this area is also significant for the local Gubbi Gubbi people and features in stories about the dreamtime.
No where else can a diversity of plant life within such a confined area be found. Open eucalypt forest skirts Mt Coolum’s lower slopes while grasslands and montane heath grow towards the summit. This is one of only two
coastal places where montane heath grows. Coastal wallum, paperbark wetlands and rainforest remnants which have largely disappeared from this part of the Sunshine Coast lowlands can be found within the confines of the park, and recently, two species of trees were discovered that are found nowhere else. About 40 percent of known fern families grow in the park and Peregrine falcons can be seen nesting along the cliff faces.
Mt Coolum is also heaven for avid bushwalkers and the views from the summit are truly spectacular - you'll be able to see coastline and beaches reaching from Moreton Island to Double Island Point, and the cane fields and wetland areas of the Maroochy River Valley.
