Mount Isa is Queensland's largest provincial city west of the Great Dividing Range, with a multicultural community of 25,000 residents who hail from more than 50 different national origins. This mining town, affectionately known by the locals as 'The Isa', is dominated by the sprawling Mount Isa Mine, and the 270m exhaust stack from the lead smelter. Australia's deepest underground mine, it is the world's largest single producer of copper, silver, lead and zinc.
Mount Isa is an oasis of civilisation in an otherwise hot and monotonous spinifex and cattle landscape. The man-made Lake Moondarra, 16km north-east of town, is a popular spot to escape the heat, providing opportunities for swimming, waterskiing, fishing and birdwatching.
