Nestled in the Dee Ranges of Central Queensland is the historic open-cut gold and coppermine town of Mt Morgan.
Located 38km south west of Rockhampton, Mt Morgan mine sites have worked off and on providing a rather good haul - the town's mine sites yielded 247,000kg of gold, 40,000kg of silver and 360,000 tonnes of copper from the 1880’s until 1981.
Mt Morgan feels like it has been stuck in a time warp and has a rather ‘Wild West’ ghost town look about it, with broad tree-lined streets and wide vernda rambling wooden buildings – some of which are architectural gems from colonial times. Mt Morgan is also a registered heritage town with a well preserved collection of period buildings.
