Nestled in the foothills of
Springbrook, contained on an 'island' within the flood plain, Mudgeeraba is a pretty suburb of the
Gold Coast that characterises the rural hinterland. Mudgeeraba also has a wild west ghost town feel, a result of being bypassed in the recent Gold Coast tourist boom.
The town has a fascinating history and is dotted with striking nineteenth century buildings. For more than a century the picturesque location has drawn timber, cattle and farming – but now Mudgeeraba is the site of hot air ballooning and easy access to Hinze Dam or nearby golf courses.
The name Mudgeeraba is thought to be an Aboriginal word meaning ‘the place where someone told lies'. Mudgeeraba hosts the July show as well as the annual Somerset Celebration of Literature which attracts leading Australian writers for workshops and public events.
