Mudjimba Beach and the suburb of Mudjimba lie just north of the Maroochy River on the
Sunshine Coast,
Queensland,
Australia. Located 9km north of
Maroochydore, this quiet open surf beach is popular with serious surfers, but also offers some great swimming in patrolled areas. Mudjimba is another spectacular pristine white sand beach that epitomises the Sunshine Coast.
Mudjimba gets its name from the local plant, the Midyam bush. Close by is The Maroochy River Conservation Park, which features some good bushwalking tracks and is home to fleet footed bush turkeys, and keen fisherman may want to note that the fishing is great on the North Shore of Maroochy River.
Approximately one kilometre off the coast is an uninhabited island, called Old Woman Island, or sometimes just Mudjimba Island. Mudjimba Island is accessible by boat and diehard local surfers have been known to paddle half an hour, over a very deep hole filled with an abundance of marine life to reach the island. There is great diving in this area but do not attempt the paddle under any circumstances. Mudjimba Island is also significant to the local Aboriginal people and the dreamtime tells the story of two mighty men Coolum and Ninderry and a woman named Maroochy. In a climatic battle Ninderry knocked Coolum’s head from his shoulders into the sea to lie where it is today as Mudjimba Island.
When visiting Mudjimba, pay tribute to the many soldiers that fought in various wars in Australian history. The memorial has one of the most comprehensive lists in Queensland. On 19th August 1995 a colourful rare tribute to United Nations Peacekeepers was added to the long standing memorial. Peace keeping centres are listed from Malaya, the Middle East, several African countries, Cyprus, and Cambodia. The long list of conflicts dates from the Maori War 1860-1861 right through to Vietnam 1962-1973.
