Nambour, located 101 kilometres north of
Brisbane, is a town that serves as the main commercial centre for the
Sunshine Coast,
Queensland. The town lies in the hinterland of the Sunshine Coast at the foot of the Blackall Range. “Naamba” is a red-flowering tea tree and it is thought that this is where the local aboriginal derived the name.
Nambour is the most southerly of Queensland's major sugar towns and, due to the hilly terrain which was not suitable

for cane cutting machines, the cane was still cut by hand in the area as recently as the 1970s. Sugar is Nambour's primary industry with extensive cane fields surrounding the town, but since the Moreton Sugar Mill closed in 2003 it seems that Nambours future now lays with tourism and farming tropical fruits such as macadamia nuts, bananas, citrus fruits and pineapples. The town is one of shopping centres rather than historical buildings. It is also home to a few of Queensland’s tacky ‘superkitch’ attractions such as
the Big Pineapple, the Big Cow and the Big Macadamia Nut, which will repulse the cynical traveller but kids will love it.
