Nerang is a suburb positioned on the banks of the Nerang River on the
Gold Coast,
Queensland. Nerang is another remnant of the townships that flourished during the 19th and 20th centuries that now characterise the rural hinterland.
Nerang has recently had a revival as the administrative centre for the growing Gold Coast. The area was once the location of the largest Aboriginal camp in south east Queensland and was a place of significance to the Kombumerri people. Also a key settlement of the early timber cutters, traders, dairy farmers and cotton growers, Nerang has a rich and diverse history that visitors should explore.
It is a picturesque town with a river running through it and a splendid native forest as its backdrop. Nerang itself, takes its name from an Aboriginal word Neerung, meaning shovelnose shark.
