Richmond is situated on the Overlander's Way (Flinders Highway) halfway between
Townsville and
Mount Isa. For travellers it is an 'Oasis in the Outback' with colourful bougainvillea-lined streets and parks, quality accommodation and a recreational lake providing fishing, swimming and watersports all year round. Richmond is home to the major Outback award-winning attraction
Kronosaurus Korner Fossil Centre, the only museum in Australia primarily dedicated to displaying marine reptiles as well as a 100-million-year-old armoured dinosaur, Minmi, considered to be Australia's best preserved dinosaur skeleton, with impressions of its fossilised skin.
Richmond is also home to 'moon rocks' – limestone spheres carrying the fossilised remains of fish, shells and trees in their cores. A monument created from moon rocks celebrates the completion of the bitumen sealing of the Flinders Highway in 1976.
