The township of Sarina lies in the foothills of the Connors Range, in an area noted for its unspoilt beauty, mountain scenery, country hospitality and prime fishing and prawning. The centre for a rich sugar growing district, Sarina also has beautiful beaches just 13km to the east and cattle properties and coalfields to the west. In the hinterland lies Middle Creek Dam, a peaceful spot for waterskiing and picnics, and south are the Koumala Ranges with spectacular views of the surrounding countryside.
Cape Palmerston National Park covers 32km of coastline and has areas ranging from mangrove swamps to thickly vegetated sand dunes and the volcanic Mount Funnel Range. The Shire has the largest coal loading facility in the southern hemisphere.
