South Stradbroke, on the
Gold Coast,
Queensland, is one of Australia's rare and unique sand islands.
22 km long by 2.5 km, Stradbroke Island is the smaller one of the two Stradbroke Islands and lies very close to the mainland. Separated from
North Stradbroke by the Jumpinpin Channel, it is interesting to note that the two islands were very recently one until a storm separated them 1896.
The island is a nature lover’s paradise. South Stradbroke Island features 22 km of ocean beaches, remnant livistona rainforest and melaleuca wetlands for exploring. With over 600 species of bird and 35 species of dazzling butterflies, South Stradbroke also has unique flora and fauna such as The Golden Wallaby which can be found only in this area.
Visitors can find quiet lagoon like beaches on the western side whilst the eastern beaches are famous for their pounding surf. Stradbroke Island is also one of the few places on the East Coast of Australia where you can see the sun rise and set over water.
There are services to South Stradbroke from Runaway Bay or alternatively boats can be chartered. There is camping, resorts, a marina, self-catering accommodation available on the Island and water taxis provide links from Marina Mirage.
